Strategy Guide Cover

INTRODUCTION

Madden 17 is here and we are proud to bring to you our first defensive guide of the year. While the game is fresh in everyone’s hands it is generally expected for everyone to struggle, and this year is no different. With all of the new zones, and the new run fit system on defense it has changed the way we play the game entirely.

First and foremost – this game is very different on defense than the past few Maddens. What we mean by that is that we cannot come out and blitz every single down and expect to contain our opponents. This year we need to learn the new coverages, how run fit truly works, and provide situational blitzes to help get your opponent off of the field.

While this guide is based out of the Buffalo Bills defensive book you can use other 34 playbooks as well. What you need to learn upon your first review of the guide is that you will need to practice. Not really practice the blitz setups, but practice adjustments on the backend. This goes for blitzing, coverage defense, and run defense. We will be adding to the guide as we find more and more ways to lock up the opposition, so stay tuned!

34 Odd

We want to first cover the 34 odd formation. This is a very good defense that can be used all 3 downs to stop the run and the pass. We can easily use this as our base defense on first down regardless of what offensive set the opponent comes out in. Our goal using this formation early on is to get early down stops to open up our use of our more blitz heavy formations for the 2nd and 3rd and longs.

Nickel 245 Double A Gap

As we enter the DB heavy sets we will be using these to mainly focus on the passing downs – or WR heavy formations (4wr). The blitzes in this formation are very simple to setup, but can be very effective in causing quick edge pressure.

Big Dime 146

Big Dime 146 has given us the similar look we used to love from Dollar, and has allowed us to send a variety of pressure from the same/similar looks. This is as excellent formation to lock in with on those down where you need a crucial pass breakup – and additionally it boasts some good run defense.

Nickel 245

Nickel 245 is an amazing formation with a ton of variety. We will want to focus on either blitzing or running coverage defense from the same look. This formation has almost every single type of coverage in the game, and that alone allows you to adapt easier to your opponent while making less adjustments on defense.

Buck Slant 3

  1. Watch video to see how to send 3, 4 or 5

Dollar Blitz Scheme

Since the show blitz from Dollar was essentially nerfed this year it took away one of our absolute favorite looks in the game. However we still dove in and found an excellent blitzing scheme to use from it mixing in the same look every time for each of the 3 blitzing plays. While the pressure we have here is not screaming it does force your opponent to make the right slide/block to stop it as they will not know where or if the heat is even coming from.

Str Eagle Slant 3/Max Sting/Edge Blitz 3

  1. Please see video for setup – same for all 3 plays.
